Data Protection

Amongst the many topics that get raised when discussing the Internet, there is considerable debate about privacy and protection of information, especially as data can potentially be transferred instantly across the globe. This page is intended to pre-empt some questions and reassure visitors about this site by listing the eight basic principles of data protection as proposed by the Data Protection Registrar (DPR) and outlines the approach adopted by Falfieldactiongroup.org.uk There are many laws in place that provide data protection in the United Kingdom and they are available for public viewing in great detail from www.dpr.gov.uk. This is a rapidly developing area of both the Internet and UK law and changes are due to be implemented with new laws coming into force in the next few months. In short the principles of the 1984 Data Protection Act state that personal data must be:-

1. Obtained and processed fairly and lawfully.
2. Held only for lawful purposes, which are described in the registration.
3. Used or disclosed only for those or compatible purposes.
4. Adequate, relevant and not excessive.
5. Accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date.
6. Held no longer than necessary.
7. Able to allow individuals to access information about them and, where appropriate, to correct it.
8. Surrounded by proper security.

There are a number of exceptions to the need to register with the Data Protection Registrar. Falfieldactiongroup.org.uk is currently seeking clarification on a claimed exemption on the basis that it does not have any funds available to cover the expense of registration and that the information solicited by the use of electronic forms is made public for all. Falfieldactiongroup.org.uk in future may provide a number of private mailing lists that are available to members but not the general public. Any information given by respondents will be treated in confidence with the express purpose of keeping members informed of activities on the site or to provide the site management with useful feedback.

As a matter of principal the information provided will not be divulged or passed on to any third party for any form of reward. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Falfield.org.uk by e-mail.
